Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT) seeks a multidisciplinary digital and creative agency to work with us to design and deliver a pilot outdoor XR experience for the village. Pilot to be launched by the end of June 2021.
The project will create a platform for a digital trail that can be added to in future and represents phase 1 of a new Interpretive Masterplan for the site. We want to use this pilot to test approaches to content with audiences, including both what that content could be but also where it should be located and how to move people between sites and around the village. This will ultimately help visitors to ‘get under the skin’ of the village by providing an additional layer of interpretation.
William Lever founded Port Sunlight in 1888, to provide the employees of his new Lever Brothers soap works with decent and affordable housing and to ensure their well-being. Port Sunlight is not the first example of an industrial worker village, but it was the first built on aesthetic principles and was a model for the Garden City movement, at the turn of the twentieth century.
Today Port Sunlight is a heritage site of national and international significance, an important visitor attraction for the Liverpool City Region, and a dynamic residential community. It is the spiritual home of Unilever, having merged with Lever Brothers in the 1930s, and home and personal care products continue to be manufactured in the village.
PSVT has funding from the Recovery and Valorisation of Maritime, Military and Industrial Heritage in the Atlantic Area Coast Project (MMIAH) Interreg Programme to commission and develop this new Cross Reality Experience. MMIAH is funded by the European Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme (2014-2020).
